Hello and welcome to the (long overdue) 15th issue of Writers with a Promise, wherein I attempt to highlight some of the up-and-coming writers frequenting dA.
Our features: akarra
We see the sky where it is skylessNot the crystal with the bluish tint,
nor the dark wisps rising from cigars.
Another realm entirely. There,
day ends in royal purple, fiery orange.
Gray walls hold those colors for an instant.
Air places dew drops upon grass,
as if to say the world begins afresh.
Birds fly together, each supporting the other.
Now the sound of change striking the sidewalk,
the smell of dirty pigeons collected.
Noting the white of the closed blinds of hospital rooms.
DisappointmentOver before it started -
my long sigh a gentle, slow exhale.
That knowledge fit perfectly into the world,
notching into place.
You couldn't escape your old habits.
No helmets or seat belts,
only the comfort of Jim Beam.
Smoking around a gas tank,
even thinking the image itself
cheats its star.
Caution cast out:
proof of you is your
arm wrestling Hercules.
There is nothing to say.
But, like code, there are solutions.
Find an elegant line that fits -
risk in order to know -
and we can begin the process
If you want a new beginning...If you want a new beginning, consider investing in a mechanized suit of armor CJWilde AimeeRaindrop
Streets shattered as giant robots
strode in the city's center to duel.
They aimed pulse guns,
hit everything but each other.
That was the day I knew I had to move.
A limb of steel and wire
fell and smashed the garage.
Salvaged my old journal,
plans for a new design.
Papers flying out of skyscrapers
reminded of drawings you sent.
I stopped by your house;
in your absence left a letter.
Finally, about to evacuate,
an eyelaser wrecked the highway.
Border of concrete and fire for miles.
Sorry, right now I'm trapped in my fears.
One day I'll sneak into a robot,
give it better aiming software.
Will kill the other, stride over to you.
We'll use the engine core to entertain guests,
but only I'm allowed in the control room.

The Wick and the Stone I.
In a lamp lit by oil,
But not yet burned,
Was a wick before the boil
Who said these words in turn:
How I long to grow
And reach a ripe old age.
Even when we turn towards heaven's gold
I cannot wait to turn the page!
And there is a truth in all of life;
That it shouldn't be spent in pining.
I may lose myself in another's strife
But will never waste my time.
Near a river and tide
Where the water wallows,
There was a stone, confiding
In the wick's words, he bemoaned:
How much you seek to know
Peaks at a certain age.
While you light the candle slowly
You have just burned another page.
And there is a feint in all of life;
That it will be spent in pining.
These eddies I did, however, abide,
But I have no hint of where the water is winding.
So shrugged a stone
In reply to the wick.
His wisdom loaned,
The lamp was lit.
SimplificationHow does the cicada know
After seventeen years of maturation
To burrow itself
Into the trunks of trees
If it has only tasted roots?
How does the cicada know
To shelter and unshelter itself
As if it were
Domestic violence under a tin roof
That goes over a young boy's head.
The Gospel in the GroundTaos hum hymnals
With banjo twang,
And raspy voices,
Of backing vocals
The skeletons can't sit still
When the gospel in the ground
Is the only sound in the sod.

Demonstrably Deviant: Issue VIIAbout
Sometimes we meet members of DeviantART who are just plain cool. They leave critique, they make great art or write great stories, they participate in groups and are generally just active and fun to be around. They also don't get any attention because being cool means you don't need attention to keep being cool. This interview series is meant to give all of you a small glimpse into the minds of these demonstrably deviant members. Twice monthly, I'll interview one of these deviants and feature work from their gallery. If you'd like to see someone interviewed for this series, just shoot me a note with the subject "Demonstrably Deviant".

"TheShelfLife is an effort to promote the published work of writers on deviantArt. The core feature of the group is The Shelf, a listing of published and self-published stories, poems, novels and graphic novels by deviants. There are also blog entries highlighting specific writers, announcing new publishing accomplishments, etc.
The group was born from a series of interviews I conducted called "Deviants in Print," which were designed to get insi
