The Wick and the Stone          I.
In a lamp lit by oil,
But not yet burned,
Was a wick before the boil
Who said these words in turn:
How I long to grow
And reach a ripe old age.
Even when we turn towards heaven's gold—
I cannot wait to turn the page!
And there is a truth in all of life;
That it shouldn't be spent in pining.
I may lose myself in another's strife
But will never waste my time.
          II.
Near a river and tide
Where the water wallows,
There was a stone, confiding
In the wick's words, he bemoaned:
How much you seek to know
Peaks at a certain age.
While you light the candle slowly
You have just burned another page.
And there is a feint in all of life;
That it will be spent in pining.
These eddies I did, however, abide,
But I have no hint of where the water is winding.
So shrugged a stone
In reply to the wick.
His wisdom loaned,
The lamp was lit.
SimplificationHow does the cicada know
After seventeen years of maturation
To burrow itself
Into the trunks of trees
If it has only tasted roots?
How does the cicada know
To shelter and unshelter itself
As if it were
Domestic violence under a tin roof
That goes over a young boy's head.
The Gospel in the GroundTaos hum hymnals
With banjo twang,
Pick-guard scratches
And raspy voices,
Tambourine hip-hits,
Muffled mumbling
Of backing vocals
And bare-knuckle
Bone-clap hi-hats.
The skeletons can't sit still
When the gospel in the ground
Is the only sound in the sod.

"TheShelfLife is an effort to promote the published work of writers on deviantArt. The core feature of the group is The Shelf, a listing of published and self-published stories, poems, novels and graphic novels by deviants. There are also blog entries highlighting specific writers, announcing new publishing accomplishments, etc.
The group was born from a series of interviews I conducted called "Deviants in Print," which were designed to get insi
